“A sustained reminder of the pleasures of exalted ordinariness. . . . tasty tale of love lost and found at the workplace” — The New York Times
What do the iconic films You’ve Got Mail (Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan), The Shop Around the Corner (Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan), and In the Good Old Summertime (Van Johnson and Judy Garland) have in common? They’re all alternate versions of the musical She Loves Me.
She Loves Me tells the romantic tale of two Budapest shop employees who clash at work, unaware that each is the other’s pen-pal soulmate. Will they ever get together? There are some comic twists, turns, and misunderstandings.
This intimate and touching show not only has the ideal rom-com plot, thanks to the book by Joe Masteroff, who wrote Cabaret. Its songs are wonderful, too. And no wonder – they’re by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick of Fiddler on the Roof fame.
She Loves Me was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1964. The 1993 Broadway revival won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and the 1994 Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.
Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance.
