Are you a high school student interested in opera and opera production? This two-part program will take you inside the process of mounting an opera through attendance at a working rehearsal; a Q&A session with the director, conductor, and artists; and then attendance at the final dress rehearsal of The Princeton Festival’s production of Madama Butterfly.

Part 1:  Staging rehearsal with Q&A

Learn how the Director, Conductor, and Artists work together to bring the opera to life on the stage –

  • Observe the mechanics of how a scene is staged, incorporating the chorus into the principal staging
  • Observe how work on individual character development advances the story
  • Observe how vocal elements such as ensemble, diction, and phrasing are refined to connect with the orchestral music
  • Observe how repetition creates a seamless scene which can then be strung together with other scenes already rehearsed as the opera is put together
  • Understand the critical role of stage management in collaboration with the cast and creative team to run the show

Part 2:  Opera Live! The Real Thing!

Go behind the scenes, literally, on a backstage tour led by Assistant Stage Manager Tony Zanghi and then watch the final dress rehearsal of Madama Butterfly.

  • Backstage Tour (optional) from 5:30 – 6:15 pm with Box Dinner
  • Final Dress Rehearsal from 7:00 – 9:40 pm
