Now in its third year, the popular and acclaimed Princeton Festival Baroque Orchestra returns for two concerts featuring the great music of the Baroque era played on “period” instruments.

Principal players of the orchestra will present a chamber music concert at 5 pm on June 23 in the glorious acoustics of the exquisite chapel at Princeton Abbey. The full orchestra will perform on Wednesday June 27 at 7:30 pm in Miller Chapel, known for its warm, enveloping sound. Both concerts promise extraordinary music-making from an outstanding period ensemble.

The great composers of the Baroque era wrote for instruments that sound very different from those in a modern orchestra. You will hear that original sound from the Princeton Festival Baroque Orchestra. Their stringed instruments use gut strings, not steel. The bows are arched and lighter in weight, with more of the weight toward the “frog” (the end of the bow held by the player). Winds and other instruments also differ from today’s norm. The result is a lighter, more transparent texture and a plangent sound that brings out the special qualities of Baroque music. Order tickets early to be sure you don’t miss hearing these revelatory performances.

Our Baroque Orchestra will also perform in a Choral Concert on June 30 at 7 pm.
